Why the glowing reviews? September 4, 2010 Q. Nguyen (Madison, WI) Antennas are a beast to research and review. Any antenna can work better than any other antenna in any given situation. This antenna might work well for some but nor for others. There are too many variables involved to have a static opinion about a certain kind of antenna. So when buying an antenna, it really turns into a game of chance. I gave this antenna a chance, and I lost out.
My thoughts...First, it's an amplified antenna. Simply put, it needs power to get reception. Also simply put, it's a waste of power over a passive antenna and not really a selling point only due to the fact that a passive antenna can get just as good (if not better) reception than an amplified antenna. Second, amplified antennas are usually much more expensive. Go to your nearest retailer and you'll se my point.
The selling points- For me, it was wall-mountable and that it had good reviews. Well, the wall mounting option was quite the doozy because the wall mount hardware did not need to be as complicated as it was. Instead of just being able to hang it up like a clock, you have to use the oddly shaped, lumpy, clumpy hardware that's included. There goes the sleek look of a wall mounted TV out the door. Mr. Fat Antenna just joined the party.
For outside, the mounting hardware is fine, but not for inside wall mounting.
Reception - not much to talk about here. Like the some other reviews said, it does no better than a passive antenna. It *needs* the amplification for it to work, just like how I need my coffee in the morning. It doesn't make my any more productive, I just need it to work.
Price - It's more expensive than a passive antenna but doesn't perform any better...explain to me again??
I've never had a good feeling about amped antennas and I'll never buy one again.
Finally! August 18, 2010 C. Boston I've tried several antennas and just about gave up until I tried this one. All of the other antenna's I have tried would pick up 4 channels max, and the ones that came in were constantly dropping in and out. I don't think I even need to set this up outside, since it works great indoors.
Philips sdv2940/27 uhf digital antenna August 8, 2010 Wayne D. Oronzio (Huntingdon Valley, PA) I was very surprised and pleased to discover how much content is available over broadcast DTV. This has allowed me to cancel my CTV services altogether. The antenna connects directly into the existing house CTV coaxial wiring. I installed it inside my attic just below the main eave of the roof in less than 15 minutes. I installed a second antenna in the same location but perpendicular with respect to the first antenna. Both antennas are connected directly into the same passive omnidirectional splitter. This configuration stabilized the signal strength and increased the number of DTV stations detected.
More channels but unstable signals. August 4, 2010 Numm in SF (San Francisco, CA) I'm by no mean a techie when it comes to TV antenna but this product simply didn't really work for me.
FYI I'm from the Bay Area, CA. East Bay to be exact.
I set it up on my roof and it picked up a whopping 42 digital channels! I was so excited at first but then realized the signals are so unstable (even with the amplified adapter) I cannot watch anything longer than 5 minutes without losing sounds or seeing small Pixelated images. I've tried to adjust the antenna direction but it didn't do anything and I still get tons of channels with poor receptions.
I then ordered another antenna (not amplified) Eagle Aspen Dtv2Buhf Directv 2-Bay Uhf Antenna http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GIT002/ref=oss_product and it seems to work better. This new antenna picked up only 30 channels but they are all clear and the signal strength are all 80% and above.
To me, it's not worth the price and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
Worth the $$ versus paying for basic cable July 9, 2010 Newbie I bought this product mainly for the price. I was skeptical initially. Turns out to be one of the best investments I've made. Crystal clear HD reception, no monthly payments. = WIN/WIN. You get your ABCs, NBC, Fox, PBS, WBZ, all my regular news/show channels that you would need. As for my movies on demand, I've got my netflix on my ps3/xbox 360.
The unit does have require an external power source (outlet).
It also depends on your area if there are HD broadcast or not.
I definitely recommend this product to anyone.
